Oggi è domenica, si va in Chiesa per essere presentata alla comunità del villaggio. Stesso copione come lo scorso anno, ma – questa volta – con sorpresa!

Mentre camminiamo da casa alla Chiesa, Moses mi spiega che oggi – ultima domenica del mese e come tutti i mesi – ci sarà una funzione speciale che include la raccolta fondi destinati alla chiesa per lavori necessari e per il supporto dei più deboli.

Poi, esattamente come lo scorso anno, sono invitata sull’altare per presentarmi.

Ma la sorpresa maggiore è  quando – durante la funzione – varie persone portano all’altare cose di vario genere: tre lunghi gambi di canna da zucchero, una gallina, due avocado, due caschi di banane e pacchi contenenti zucchero, fagioli, farina ed altro ancora.

Successivamente Moses, come esponente di spicco della comunità, nonché il presidente del comitato per la costruzione del nuovo asilo, mi prega di iniziare le offerte, cosa che ho fatto con l’applauso di tutti i presenti. Poi, lui  inizia a parlare tenendo in mano gli avocado.

Pur non capendo nulla di quanto venga detto (si parla la lingua locale), intendo che si sta trattando di un’asta per raccogliere i fondi.

Vorrei partecipare per aggiudicarmi la gallina e portarla a casa per la famiglia, ma capisco che qualcuno l’ha già comprata. Alla fine della funzione, è chiaro che chi l’ha comprata è Moses.

faccio  quindi un’offerta per quanto viene bandito poco dopo, pur non sapendo di cosa si tratta, è qualcosa in un sacchetto, si rivela essere una gonna azzurra con disegni bianchi, tutta a pieghe, in tessuto artificiale e, ovviamente, “made in China”. Offro 20.000 scellini, l’equivalente di 5 euro, e, nell’euforia generale per l’offerta “esorbitante”, vado a ritirare il mio acquisto.

Alla fine dell’asta, Moses dice ai presenti che io devo essere considerata “l’ospite d’onore” di questa domenica essendo la persona che ha dato il via alla raccolta e che ha fatto l’offerta più ata dell’intera asta. Applauso generale e grida da parte dei presenti.

Poi, insieme, lasciamo la Chiesa con il nostro “bottino”: una canna da zucchero, la gallina, un casco di banane e la gonna che, appena arrivata a casa, regalo a Florence. Lei se la prova sopra tutti gli altri abiti che indossa e fa un giro di danza per la contentezza!

Anch’io sono contenta! È stata proprio una bella domenica coronata, poi, dalla visita al cantiere nel tardo pomeriggio accompagnata da Martin. Ho visto quanto lavorano gli operai, anche oggi che è domenica ci hanno dato sotto davvero. E i progressi sono più che evidenti.

Today, it’s Sunday and we go to Church. I have to be introduced to the community, as it happened last year.

Walking from home to Church, Moses tells me that today, the last Sunday of the month, the function will be a special one because it includes a fund raising for the Church to do some works and help people.

Then, exactly as last year, I’m invited by the priest to introduce myself, which I do. Some people recognize me from last year, and they applaude.

Then, the surprise. During the function, some people come and present their gifts to the priest: three long sticks of sugar cane, a chicken, some avocados, two bunches of bananas  and packs of sugar, beans, flour and other things.

After that, Moses, being a prominent person in the village and now the chairman of the committee in charge of building the new pre-school, asks me from the altar to start offering. I do this while people around applaud. Then, he starts speaking with the two avocados in his hands.

Although I don’t understand a word of what he’s saying (he speaks the local language), I figure out that an auction is in progress to raise funds.

I’d like to bid to be awarded the chicken and take it home for the family, but I understand that somebody else got it. At the end of the function, it’s clear that it was Moses!

I make the bid for the next thing which is a light-blue and white China made  skirt. I bid 20,000 UGX, equivalent to 5 Euros and I get it.

At the end of the auction, Moses informs the audience that I’m today’s “guest of honor” and there’s again a round of applause!

Then, together we leave for home with our purchases: a sugar cane stick, the chicken, a bunch of bananas and the skirt. As soon as I get home, I give Florence the skirt and she’s very happy!

I’m happy too. It has been a nice Sunday

At the end of the afternoon, I went to the site with Martin to see how the works are progressing. I realize how hard the people are working. They’ve been working for the whole day even today that’s Sunday and the results are very real to see!
