Finiti i lavori, ho archiviato pitture e pennelli!

La scuola ed il secondo blocco si possono definire finiti, ma non completi. Resta una parte importante: la copertura e tinteggiature dei muri esterni e quelli interni delle tre aule. In primo luogo  l’esterno, prima che il sole equatoriale rovini i mattoni e, pertanto, compromettere tutto l’edificio.

Abbiamo comunque raggiunto  un ottimo risultato e più del 90% si è realizzato grazie alle donazioni dei miei amici e parenti che, sono sicura, saranno molto soddisfatti di vedere questo risultato e sapere dove è finito il loro denaro. Grazie a tutti i donatori.

All’inizio della settimana, è arrivato Manuel, un ragazzo portoghese che abita a Berlino da qualche anno. Insieme a Sara e Paul ed altri amici, hanno fondato, un paio d’anni fa, l’associazione Lillipad. Bene, anche Lillipad è diventata una importante realtà nel sostenere il progetto ugandese.

Manuel è arrivato con due “valigione” piene di libri, principalmente libri per bambini, ma anche libri per adulti e libri scolastici che qui sono sempre necessari. Lillipad, attraverso Manuel, ha poi contribuito con una donazione all’acquisto dei materiali per costruire due librerie, di sedie e tavolo e di altri libri. Per fine settimana saremo in grado di allestire, all’interno della grande sala del secondo blocco, la “Kyabirwa Community Library”, una biblioteca a disposizione dell’intera comunità del villaggio di Kyabirwa.

Credo che tutto quello che abbiamo fatto e che stiamo facendo rappresenti un risultato importante per questa comunità.

Devo aggiungere che Lillipad, lo scorso anno, aveva donato le altalene poste nel cortile della scuola. Ieri ne sono state acquistate altre due, ora in fase di installazione.

Oggi, 7 marzo 2019, ha avuto luogo l’assemblea con i genitori. Era presente anche la signora Susannah Hill, inglese di Bristol, fondatrice, con il marito, di Fingerprints. Questa associazione opera in Uganda da circa 11 anni e, dallo scorso anno – inizio delle attività nella “nostra” scuola materna – provvede all’acquisto della farina che serve per il porridge servito ai bambini tutti i giorni durante l’intervallo. Mi preme ricordare come questa merenda sia importanti per molti dei “nostri” bambini perché  è l’unico pasto che assumono durante la giornata.

E’ stato bello, oggi, essere tutti e tre insieme di fronte ai genitori. Manuel per Lillipad, Susannah per Fingerprints ed io, ormai “ufficialmente” la presidente di T.Y.Foundation – Tukolaganhe Youth Foundation dove Tukolaganhe, in lingua locale, significa “lavoriamo insieme”. Abbiamo potuto constatare che gli sforzi fatti individualmente stanno producendo grandi frutti ed è su questo percorso di collaborazione che dobbiamo continuare a lavorare insieme.

Alla fine dell’incontro, sono stati distribuiti abiti per bambini ed adulti che avevo portato dall’Italia, due valigie grandi e…pesanti! Inutile descrivere la contentezza delle persone. Alla fine, è stato per me particolarmente toccante il ringraziamento da parte di un nonno presente all’incontro che mi ha ricordato le parole di  Madre Teresa a me molto care : “ciascuno di noi è una goccia…tante gocce insieme fanno un oceano”.

Paints and brushes are definitely abandoned: the works are over!

The school and the second block are finished, although not fully completed yet. There still the plastering of the three classrooms and of all the external walls plus the painting to be done, before the equatorial sun can spoil the bricks and compromise the whole building.

However, we’ve achieved an important goal and more than 90% of it was made possible by the donations of my (Italian) friends and family members who will be happy to see where their money has gone. A big thank you to all the donors.

At the beginning of the week, Manuel, a Portuguese young man who lives in Berlin joined us. Manuel, together with Sara and Paul and a bunch of friends founded Lillipad, a nonprofit association two years ago.

Well, also Lillipad is an important partner and supporter of our project.

Manuel arrived with two huge suitcases full of books. Books for children, youths, grown-ups and scholastic books. Moreover, he brought a donation that has been spent to buy the materials to build two bookcases, to buy chairs, a table and many other books. By the end of the week, we will have fitted the big room of the second block with all the necessary stuff to organize the “Kyabirwa Community Library”, a library available to the whole village community.

I have to add that last year Lillipad donated two swings which are now placed in the school’s yard. Two more have been bought yesterday and are now on their way to be installed.

Today, March 7th, 2019, a meeting was held with the parents at the school. Mrs. Susannah Hill from Bristol, founder with her husband of Fingerprints was there with us.

Fingerprints is an English nonprofit association operating in Uganda for more than eleven years now. Since the beginning of the activities at “our” school a year ago, Fingerprints has bought the flour to make the porridge for the children which is served during break time. I must remind the readers that porridge is, for many a child, the only food they get during the day.

It was nice to be there together the three of us. Manuel for Lillipad, Susannah for Fingerprints and me, the “official” chairperson of T.Y.Foundation – Tukolaganhe Youth Foundation where Tukolaganhe means in the local language “work together”. We could realize that our individual efforts are producing good fruits and we must continue on the path of a constant cooperation.

At the end of the meeting the clothes I brought from Italy were distributed. A touching thank you came from a grandfather who was present. He reminded me of the words of Mather Theresa which I dear most: “each of us is a drop…many  drops together make an ocean”…
