Siamo al 18° giorno dal mio arrivo e… che ci crediate o no, oggi è iniziata la scuola!

L’asilo è aperto ed ha iniziato a funzionare. Ad oggi, ci sono 45 bambini iscritti, ma altri arriveranno.

Certo, le condizioni di inizio sono un po’ precarie, siamo ancora nel cantiere e non tutto è stato completato, ma, con la gioia di tutti, ci si muove e si parte! Per il primo giorno, restiamo all’aperto. Le classi non sono ancora finite, mancano porte e finestre che saranno installate domani, ma poco importa.

 Alcuni bambini sono seduti su dei banchi non ancora dipinti, ancora di legno grezzo che trasuda la sua linfa, appositamente portati da casa, dove il falegname li sta ancora finendo e che, alla fine delle lezioni (a mezzogiorno), saranno riportati indietro per la pittura. Altri bambini, me compresa, ci sediamo per terra con pezzi di carta (la carta dei sacchi di cemento utilizzato) sotto al sedere a far da sedile per non sporcarci…..! Piuttosto divertente!

E’ stato interessante vedere le mamme portare i loro bimbi a scuola con la dignità e l’orgoglio di chi ha capito quanto sia importante educare i propri figli per un futuro che sarà sicuramente migliore.

Al mattino, è’ stato emozionante vedere la soddisfazione di Moses  e delle tre insegnanti  nell’iniziare le attività scolastiche con così tanti bambini in giro. Bambini che sicuramente potranno avere un’istruzione di qualità che li renderà cittadini migliori e più consapevoli e responsabili.

Il primo giorno è stato abbastanza soft. I bambini, soprattutto quelli piccolissimi (3 anni) si devono abituare a stare insieme e condividere il tempo a scuola con i loro simili che, non sempre, sono gli stessi compagni di gioco. Devono anche familiarizzare con un po’ di disciplina, che, al momento, è completamente assente, ma verrà con il tempo.

Oggi possiamo dire che la “pre-school della comunità di Kyabirwa” è funzionante.

Today, it’s the 18th day since I got here and…  believe it or not, the school has started!

The pre-school is open and active. As of today, 45 children has been registered, but many others are joining during the week.

The starting of the school activities is a bit precarious: there’s still a building site going on because not all the works have been completed but people are happy because the school has started for real.

For the first day, we stay outdoor because the classrooms haven’t been finished yet. Doors and windows are missing, although ready, the ‘ll be built-in tomorrow, but it doesn’t matter.

Some of the kids are sitting on few desks still raw, not painted, which have been brought from home. The carpenter is still working on them and – at noon, when lessons finish, they’ll be taken back to be painted. Other kids, me included, are sitting on the ground with pieces of paper under our buttocks not to get dirty! Paper scraps from the cement bags that have been used! It’s all so funny

Early in the morning, it has been very interesting to see the mothers walking their children to school with dignity and pride because they are conscious that it’s all to improve  their children’s future and make it brighter.

I was moved to see the great satisfaction in Moses and the three teachers’ faces happy to begin their lessons with so many children around and many more to join. A good quality education will make these children better and more confident citizens in the future.

The first day’s activities have been soft. The children, in particular the youngest ones (3 yrs of age) had to socialize with themselves and learn how to share their time with other children who are not always their playmates. They have also to start learning a bit of discipline which, at this stage, is totally missing. However, we are all confident that they will be good learners.

So, starting today, we can say that the pre-school of Kyabirwa community is on the go and in full motion!

Secondo giorno di attività. Oggi si fa sul serio!

La copertura del tetto è finita e questo ha permesso di allestire le aule con i banchi che sono stati portati da casa a scuola da due rappresentanti della comunità e membri  del comitato locale che si occupa della realizzazione e, successivamente,  della gestione dell’asilo.

Per il momento, i bambini sono tutti insieme in una sola aula. Probabilmente, dalla prossima settimana saranno suddivisi nelle tre classi, a seconda dell’età, e le insegnanti inizieranno il loro programma di insegnamento.

Anche oggi sono arrivati nuovi bambini, il numero cresce, si sparge la voce per tutto il villaggio ed anche nei villaggi vicini e tutti vogliono mandare i loro bimbi in questa nuova scuola…..è incredibile!

Second day of lessons.

The roofing of the building has been completed and this has allowed to put the desks inside the classrooms. The desks have been carried from home to the school by two strong men, both members of the local committee that has decided to buil the new school. This committee will be in charge also of the school management.

Today, the children are gathered in just one room. By next week, they’ll be divided into the three different courses, according to their age, and the teachers will start their program.

New children have joined today, the number is increasing because words have spread around the village and also around neighboring villages and  parents want to send their children to this new school! …. It’s unbelievable.
