E’ già passata una settimana dal mio arrivo… e quanto è successo! A volte penso abbia  un po’ dell’incredibile….se non fosse che sono qui e vedo e documento con le fotografie tutto quello che viene fatto.

Dallo scorso venerdì, appena arrivata e fatto un primo sopralluogo sul terreno dove deve sorgere la nuova scuola materna, oggi, esattamente dopo una settimana, ho fotografato un edificio già eretto, il primo blocco dedicato alle tre aule già eretto sino alla misura dove deve essere posato il tetto, più le fondazioni erette per il secondo blocco, quello dove sorgeranno le stanze per gli uffici e quella più ampia per il magazzino.

Oltre a questo, sono stati fatti gli scavi per le latrine con una profondità di ben 40m.

Va precisato che il secondo blocco, una volta completato – e questo sarà possibile all’arrivo di nuove risorse per cui i comitati promotori del progetto, sia quello locale che quello internazionale, stanno lavorando per l’ottenimento – diventerà l’officina per l’addestramento di giovani che hanno lasciato la scuola e vogliono imparare un mestiere.

Si inizierà con corsi per diventare riparatori di motociclette – importante considerato l’alto numero di moto usate come taxi, i famosi “boda-boda” - poi con altri corsi per imparare ad usare il computer e, successivamente, saranno avviati corsi disponibili a tutti i componenti la comunità rurale di Kyabirwa per l’uso di questa tecnologia.

Contemporaneamente a questo secondo step, saranno organizzate riunioni per la comunità intera per sensibilizzare gli abitanti verso i problemi causati dall’HIV/AIDS, dall’abuso di droghe, come prevenire maternità indesiderate  e matrimoni in età prematura.

E’ sicuramente un progetto molto ambizioso, ma – visti i risultati ottenuti in una sola settimana – qui siamo tutti molto fiduciosi che nell’arco dei prossimi due anni si possa realizzare tutto quanto fa parte del progetto stesso.

Intanto oggi è arrivata una boccata di ossigeno da supporter tedeschi e questa infusione di risorse ci darà la possibilità domani di acquistare il legno per il tetto delle tre aule.

Mi sento completamente coinvolta in questa avventura e sto lavorando tanto per produrre documenti che vanno presentati regolarmente alle autorità locali e per gli aggiornamenti da inviare ai partner stranieri, tutti ex volontari che hanno ben conosciuto questa realtà, che stanno lavorando sul fronte della raccolta fondi. Lavoro tanto e sono contenta, mi sento utile per qualcosa di significativo a beneficio di  queste persone che, a differenza mia, senza colpa, sono nate in una terra ricchissima, ma poco generosa nei loro riguardi.

Oggi sono stata a Jinja con Martin. L’ho reso il bambino più felice del mondo. Abbiamo trascorso una bella giornata insieme e l’ho portato al Sailing Club, un posto per “stranieri” dove non avrebbe mai avuto la possibilità di andarci da solo. Era contento con il suo zaino nuovo! Siamo ritornati con il “boda-boda” ovviamente tutti impolverati dalla famigerata terra rossa! Bella giornata!!

A week has already passed since I arrived… and a lot of things have  happened! Sometimes, I myself  I can’t believe my eyes… but it’s real and the photos I’m taking make evident this reality

Last Friday I visited  an empty field, the field  where the new pre-school was meant to be constructed,  today, exactly a week later, I took the photo of a building, the first block of the three classrooms, built up to the point where the roof will be put together starting tomorrow, plus the foundations of the second block where the offices and the storage room will be completed.

In addition to these works, also the pit of the latrines has been dug with a depth of 40 m from ground level.

It has to be said that for the second block, once completed, the storage area will become the workshop for training youths, mainly school dropouts, to become mechanics and computer experts.

The completion of the second block will be possible when new funds are coming. In this respect, either the local and the internationl committes are working on attracting new funding  in particular through the “Global Funding” agency.

Mechanics are very much required, in particular to repair motorbikes, considering the high number of bikes which are used as taxis, the famous “boda-boda”. Computer experts are important as well to train youths in this technology. In a later stage, courses for the Kyabirwa community members will be held to give them feedback on how to use a computer.

At the same time, half-day workshops will be organized for the community as a whole, to rise their awareness on topics like HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, early pregnancy and early marriage.

The project sounds very ambitious but considering what has been achieved in only one week, everybody here is confident that in the next two years everything can be completed.

Today, we have received a donation from some German people. This is a very positive result which, tomorrow, will allow us to buy the timber necessary to roof the three classrooms.

I’m deeply involved in this “adventure” and I’m working very hard on the papers that have to be presented to the local authorities as well as preparing the update for the foreign friends who are in the project. These people were volunteers here in the past and all of them are committed to raise funds for the project.

I work really hard, but I’m happy. I feel I’m useful here helping to improve the wellbeing of these people who were born in a very rich continent which has not been generous to them at all.

Today, I’ve been to Jinja with Martin. I made him the happiest boy in the world for the day. We had a good time. We also went to the Jinja Sailing Club, a place for “mzungu” (white/foreign people) .

He was happy with his new rucksack!

We returned home by “boda-boda”. When we arrived, we were all dusted red! It has been a very good day.
